A farmer by day, a scout by night. A house like any other - with double walls, hidden stairs and an exit only the family knew

Skin-tight black, face covered.
Fact →A farmer's or monk's clothes. At night, dark blue: pure black stands out under the moon. The black suit came from kabuki theatre.
A bang - and he dissolves into air.
Fact →A smoke ball bought three seconds - to a corner or a prepared crawlway. The vanishing was arranged before entering.

The throwing plate

Sickle and chain
→The weight tangles the blade, the sickle finishes. In peacetime, just a sickle on a belt.
Hook and rope
→Wall, branch, crossing, tripline. Horsehair rope that holds a man.
Spikes against pursuit
→A handful on the path behind you: one point always up. A pursuit in sandals stops itself.
Blinding powder
→Ash and pepper in the eyes - ten paces of head start. A weapon of escape, not battle.
The digging blade
→Dig a crawlway, pry a shutter, a step in a wall. A crowbar you did not mind losing.
Powder and flash
→A bang, smoke - three seconds when everyone looks the wrong way. Hence the vanishing legend.
The blade in a staff
→A pilgrim's staff with a blade inside. Raises no questions at any checkpoint.

Men of Koka burn the shogun's camp at Magari. The valleys' reputation becomes a commodity.
Iga detachments will guard Ieyasu all his life.
Forty thousand men against one valley. The survivors scatter the school across the country.
Shinobi guide Ieyasu home along secret paths. That one service decides the trade's future.
Ieyasu becomes shogun. Iga veterans guard Edo castle; the Hanzomon gate keeps Hanzo's name.

Storytellers filled the void
Edo theatre gave them the black suit, cinema gave them flight. That is how a farmer-scout became Japan's most recognisable hero
